The Delhi Government has, at last, agreed to the following systemic changes in
PDS in Delhi:
1. The shops were economically unviable due to very low commissions. The govt announced last week that they would raise the commissions given to the ration shop owners to make them viable.
2. Following dramatic improvements in the PDS in Sundernagari (New Delhi), the Govt has also agreed to throw open the records of all the shops in Delhi for public inspection every Saturday during 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The people, without paying any fee and without giving any prior intimation, will be able to go to any Food office in Delhi on any Saturday afternoon and inspect the records of any shop falling within the jurisdiction of that office. However, this will be implemented in phases. Starting 1st April, the records of two districts viz East and North East districts, will be thrown open for public inspection. In the coming months, the rest of the Delhi will also be covered. If any discrepancy were found in the records during public inspection, the shop would be placed under suspension immediately on the spot and criminal proceedings initiated subsequently.
We have also submitted a set of suggestions to lay down principles to fix the
accountability of Food officials. These are still under consideration of the
govt.
