Toxic corridors - Photos
Courtesy of Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti. Main feature.
Hazardous solid waste dumped by chemical industries in Vapi by the
Damanganga river close to the industrial estate. The waste is washed into
the river by monsoon rains and pollutes the river. This pollution
contaminates a clean water sources (wells and river itself) for over 20
villages upto the sea, on the banks of the river.
A primary school borewell in Vadhiavad hamlet of Kocharva village near Phase
III of Vapi industrial estate. A nearby well has been found with mercury
almost 100 times allowable limit by WHO standards. Children are forced to
drink this water as a clean water source is over a mile away. Mercury is a
very toxic heavy metal affecting neurological development of children and
bone development.
