Awareness and solutions
Thimmakka engages the natural environment.
March 2001:
Founded in 1998 in California, USA, Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education is a global environmental South Asian non-profit. Thimmakka informs people on what one can do for the environment in one's daily life. Currently, the organization has a few ongoing projects: Greening south Asian restaurants and businesses, the South Asia Environmental Film Festival, South Asian Environmental Fashion Show [Delhi,India], and the Directory of South Asian Environmental Professionals.
The name Thimmakka" honors a south Indian woman hailing from the village of Hulikal in the state of Karnataka. This remarkable woman got "tired of her neighbours taunts for being infertile", and decided to adopt. She adopted 284 Banyan trees as her children. Today they cover a stretch of 1.57 km and she was honored with the Prime Minister's award for social forestry!
Thimmakka's efforts also include informaing urban consumers of the environmental consequences of their choices, and about environmental conditions in neglected rural areas. Regular news reports from Thimmakka can help you remain current with ongoing struggles in India, as well as elsewhere in South Asia. These reports include handy links to environmental stories in mainstream as well as green media, and cover a range of topics. Recent coverage on the Thimmakka site included short reports and links to stories about all of the following - health hazards from radioactive dumping, genetically modified crops, continuing reduction in arable land in India, and pesticide use in tea estates in North Bengal.
